It’s Easter Monday and it’s April already so a new monthly theme for Coloricombo.
The artwork I’ve chosen is a postage stamp from Slovakia, based on a traditional motif from Vajnory, now part of Bratislava. The stamp was one of a series released in 2017 as a commemorative Easter issue, based on originals created by a group of unnamed Vajnory women in 1968 and reworked by the folk artist Hedviga Krištofičová (1909-1999).
The motif depicts a a pelican feeding its young with its blood as a symbol of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.
