Meandering through French villages and towns has been such an inspiration over the last three weeks. Discovering gems like a 11th century Romanesque church just down the road from our accommodation is such a thrill. Last week we went on a trip further away, to the larger town of Bergerac.

This town sits on the banks of the river Dordogne, it is quite sprawling (although that’s relative) with a beautiful and well preserved historic centre filled interesting medieval architecture

In total contrast to the ancient buildings, a selection of of well placed street art can be found, the majority created for the annual Street Art de Bergerac festival orgainised by Art Tak.

The one that caught my eye is a large abstract with simplified wine bottle shapes as well as green, yellow and deep red colour blocks. It was painted by @brez72 and is the featured artwork for this week’s coloricombo prompt.

Mathias Brez (1972-) hails from Rennes in France and says that his works lies between abstraction and figuration. Paintings are inspired by the panorama whilst they play with the surfaces that are available to him.

This composition for the festival in 2024 brings together all the graphic elements of the façade and evokes the region’s wine-growing specialities. The artist’s website is here and his Instagram here. The organisers of the festival are here.

Video Demo

Today I recorded a demo for contributing subscribers where I incorporated an antique key as decorative shape along with the limited colour palette. You can see the two sketchbook drawing outcomes and you’re welcome to printout this antique key and use is as a template, stencil or reference to create from.

By mastering these techniques you can incorporate them in all kinds of themes and topics, from still life, landscape and floral paintings, abstraction is a central element to my creative process in my own practice.
